Miles held her gaze for a beat longer than necessary\u2014long enough that Nora felt the room narrow to the space between them. Then he gave a small, almost imperceptible nod, the same one he\u2019d given her through the coffee shop window days ago. He excused himself from the loose circle he\u2019d been in and started across the room, unhurried, notebook still tucked under his arm like a shield he didn\u2019t quite need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nora didn\u2019t move. She could have. She could have turned, slipped toward the exit, blamed the crowd or the wine or anything. Instead she stayed rooted, wine glass cool against her palm, watching him close the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
