Nora held his gaze for a second longer than she needed to, letting the moment sit.

“Not too much,” she said finally, voice light but deliberate. “But maybe unnecessary. Tomorrow you might find a note waiting for you instead.”

A flicker of surprise lifted his brows, then settled into a slow, appreciative smile. “You’re flipping the script.”

“Balance,” she replied. “Equal footing. You can’t always be the one leaving surprises.”

Miles exhaled a quiet laugh. “I’ll be checking the sleeve like it’s a lottery ticket.”

“Good,” she said, the corner of her mouth curving. “Suspense is fair play.”

The banter landed easily—clean, quick, no edges. Nora felt it again: the strange absence of friction. Talking to him required no translation, no careful editing. The words simply arrived and fit.

They turned together toward the nearest painting: sharp geometric forms in slate and indigo trying to lock into place, but interrupted by sudden, jagged bursts of thinner, wilder strokes that bled across the edges.

Nora tilted her head. “This one doesn’t know what it wants to be.”

Miles studied it with her, hands in his pockets. “How so?”

“It tends toward precision—those clean lines, the measured blocks—but then it blurts out chaos. Like it couldn’t decide whether to stay controlled or let go, so it did both at once. Half commitment.”

He nodded slowly, taking in the canvas again. “That’s a sharp way to read it. Most people just say ‘busy’ or ‘confusing.’”

“I’m saying it’s undecided,” she corrected, dry but not unkind. “It’s trying to be both things and ends up convincing at neither.”

Miles gave a small, thoughtful hum. “Sometimes indecision is the subject. The artist might have wanted the tension to show.”

“Maybe.” Nora shrugged one shoulder. “But tension needs intent. This feels accidental.”

He turned to face her fully now, expression calm but curious. “You don’t pull punches.”

“I don’t see the point in soft criticism if the question is honest.”

“Fair.” He glanced back at the painting once more, then met her eyes again. “I sponsor the artist, by the way.”

Nora blinked. “You sponsor artists?”

“Occasionally. This one especially.”

She studied his face for a beat, searching for defensiveness and finding none. “That explains the thoughtful defense.”

Then Miles added, “Well, She’s my niece. So, consider it a family obligation.”

To be continued tomorrow…
